Not Sprunke

Something broke on the Not Sprunke stage before you arrived. A close reading of the cracked backdrop, all six characters, the power dynamics between them, and what the mod is actually saying by refusing the original cast.

What is Not Sprunke?

The cracked backdrop is the first piece of story Not Sprunke tells you, and it does it before a single loop plays. Shattered grey material over deep red — broken concrete, or fractured glass — spread behind a lineup of six neon figures. Nobody explains it. The implication is enough: something happened here, and it happened before you loaded the page.

Not Sprunke is a fan-made mod of the Sprunki music-mixing format that goes further than a reskin. It removes the entire original roster — no Oren, no Raddy, no familiar silhouettes — and stages six characters designed from scratch, each with its own visual language rather than a shared house style. The refusal is the concept. Not Sprunke is named after what it will not give you.

Read as a piece of world-building rather than a soundboard, Not Sprunke is one of the more coherent art statements in this corner of the mod scene. It plays free in a browser, needs no install, and takes about a minute to understand and much longer to stop thinking about.

Not Sprunke

How to Play Not Sprunke?

The interaction model is simple enough to describe in six lines:

  1. Look before you touch. Spend a moment on the Not Sprunke stage itself — the cracks, the colour contrast, the pink pixel squares in the top corners. The mod front-loads its atmosphere.
  2. Click a character to audition its loop. In Not Sprunke you cannot read a character's musical role off its design, so previewing is not optional.
  3. Drag it onto an empty slot to bring that loop into the mix. It enters on the beat automatically.
  4. Layer up to seven characters at once and listen for how their sounds argue with each other.
  5. Mute, unmute, and swap while the loop runs to shape the arrangement in real time.
  6. Drag a character off the stage to drop that layer and try a different combination.

No timers, no scoring, no failure. Not Sprunke ends when you decide the loop is finished.

Game Features of Not Sprunke

  • A stage with implied history. The cracked red-and-grey backdrop of Not Sprunke functions as narrative, not decoration.
  • Total roster replacement. Six original characters, zero carried over. Not Sprunke is the clearest example of a mod treating the base cast as optional.
  • Deliberate colour violence. Saturated neon characters against damaged surroundings. Both halves get louder because of the contrast, and that is the whole visual strategy of Not Sprunke.
  • Non-standard interface details. Pink pixel squares in the top corners, present in no conventional layout, marking Not Sprunke as operating outside the usual grammar.
  • Individually authored designs. Each Not Sprunke character reads as its own project rather than a variation on a template.
  • Scale as storytelling. One tiny frightened figure beside one enormous grinning one. Not Sprunke uses that size gap exactly once, and it lands.
  • Instant browser access. No install, no account, no barrier between reading about Not Sprunke and being inside it.

Why Play Not Sprunke?

Play it for the art direction. That is an unusual recommendation for a music game, but Not Sprunke is an unusual case: the roster and the stage are doing more interesting work than most fan mods manage in either department, and the mixing engine underneath is a reliable way to spend time with them.

There is a second reason, quieter. Not Sprunke is a mod about erasure that never says the word. The characters you knew are gone, the ground is broken, one figure is mid-scream, another cannot see straight, a third has an eye where a flower's face should be. Nothing is narrated. Every conclusion you reach about Not Sprunke you assemble yourself out of design choices, which is why the mod sticks longer than its runtime suggests it should.

And if you want none of that: Not Sprunke is a free browser toy that makes decent industrial loops in ninety seconds. Both readings are valid.

Character Design of Not Sprunke

Six characters, no shared template, arranged left to right:

The purple horned figure. A body built from geometry rather than softness — star-shaped, angular, horned at the top, black markings laid over a yellow lower body that could be tribal patterning or could be corruption. It is designed to occupy space and signal threat before it does anything. In a Not Sprunke lineup full of expressive faces, this one is closer to a heraldic symbol than a character.

The orange headphones figure. The only member of the Not Sprunke cast that gestures at the old roster, and the resemblance stops at the colour and the headphones. Its face is dominated by large black spirals where eyes should be — not angry, not friendly, just off, somewhere between dizzy and corrupted. Whatever this character used to be, the spirals suggest something changed the way it perceives things.

The grey screaming figure. Centre-left, and the one you look at first. Cat-ear shapes, wide frightened eyes, an enormous open mouth showing rows of small teeth, colouring washed grey of all warmth. This character is in the middle of something going badly. Whether it is screaming at the rest of the lineup or at whatever the cracked stage represents, the distress is unguarded — the most human reaction in a Not Sprunke roster that otherwise looks past human.

The green flower figure. Slowest to parse and best rewarded by patience. Daisy or sunflower petals radiate from the head, framing one enormous black eye with a small green iris. A red body sits below. Flowers are supposed to be warm; a single unblinking eye inside petals is not. This is the quietly most effective design decision in Not Sprunke, because it corrupts something that carries no threat at all.

The red beaked figure. An elongated beak-like mouth, hollow dark eye sockets, bird-like in silhouette. It looks like something that hunts rather than performs. In a lineup that contains a screaming character and a flower-eyed one, the red figure's total stillness is what makes it the most threatening presence in Not Sprunke.

The yellow grinning figure. Closes the lineup and takes the opposite approach to the red figure. A wide manic grin packed with teeth eats most of the lower face. The yellow is bright and nearly cheerful, which makes the grin worse instead of better. Near it stands a small blue character, tiny and scared-looking — the one place Not Sprunke plays with scale, and it draws a power dynamic without a word of text.

Tips and Strategies for Not Sprunke

  • Treat the lineup as a cast, not a menu. Building a Not Sprunke mix around a relationship — the grinning figure and the frightened blue one, say — gives your loop a subject.
  • Preview everything once, then commit. The Not Sprunke designs will mislead you about their sounds. Trust your ears over the artwork.
  • Give the flower figure space. Its strangeness needs a thin arrangement to register. Bury it in seven layers and you lose the best idea in Not Sprunke.
  • Use the still character as your anchor. The red beaked figure holds a busy Not Sprunke stack together better than another animated layer will.
  • Watch the stage react. The visual response is a diagnostic. If Not Sprunke never calms down, neither does your mix.
  • Stop at four or five slots first. Fill all seven only after you know what each Not Sprunke layer contributes alone.
  • Screenshot your best stage. Combinations are easy to lose, and in Not Sprunke the visual arrangement is half of what you built.

Community Engagement of Not Sprunke

The conversation around Not Sprunke skews visual, which is rare for a music mod. Fan drawings of the grey screaming figure, redesigns of the flower-eyed character, and threads arguing about what the cracked background depicts all circulate alongside the usual mix recordings. Because Not Sprunke supplies no text, interpretation becomes the community activity: people fill the silence with theories about what broke the stage and who these six figures were beforehand.

That is the same engine that drove the wider Sprunki modding scene from a single Scratch upload to hundreds of fan phases and remixes — players building on top of an ambiguity the original left open. Not Sprunke fits that pattern neatly. Post your mix, post your reading of the roster, and someone will disagree with both. That is the point.

Not Sprunke FAQ

Is there an official story behind Not Sprunke? No published lore. Not Sprunke communicates entirely through art direction — the cracked stage, the expressions, the scale contrast — and leaves the interpretation to players.

Which Not Sprunke character is the most unsettling? Community opinion splits between the green flower figure, for putting one unblinking eye inside friendly petals, and the red beaked figure, whose stillness reads as predatory next to a lineup of animated faces.

Are the original Sprunki characters hidden anywhere in Not Sprunke? Not in the visible lineup. Not Sprunke replaces the cast completely; the closest thing to a reference is the orange headphones figure, and the similarity stops at colour and accessory.

What is the small blue character in Not Sprunke? A tiny frightened-looking figure positioned near the large yellow grinning character. It is the only place Not Sprunke uses a size difference, and it establishes a clear power dynamic.

Do I need to finish other mods before playing Not Sprunke? No. Not Sprunke shares no characters or continuity with any other mod, so it works as a standalone starting point.

Is Not Sprunke suitable for younger players? Use judgment. Not Sprunke contains no explicit content, but distressed expressions, damaged environments and decay imagery run through the whole mod.

Is Not Sprunke affiliated with Incredibox? No. Not Sprunke is unofficial fan work, made independently of Incredibox and of the original Sprunki creator.
